Fun Fall Books for Toddlers

Reading is very important and thoroughly enjoyed in our household. When I was pregnant with Elani, I requested books in lieu of cards at my shower and we received many wonderful books to add to our collection. I added books from my classroom and we’ve also added some of my husband’s childhood books. On top of that, we’ve made sure to purchase books as holiday gifts and birthday gifts. I have also purchased books when I’ve found deals and sales. We had a few fall books from last year, but I added a few more this fall. Don’t forget about your library! It’s a great way to discover fun books before purchasing. These are some of the books that we have recently been enjoying.

Fall Themed Books

All three of these books were new additions to our collection this fall. After reading a few fall books from the library, I quickly realized that we only had holiday books, but no fall books for the new season. I will be adding more each year, but I chose these three for now and am happy with them all.

Leaves is a sweet story about a little bear’s experience with his first fall. At first, he is concerned with the falling leaves and tries his best to fix things. The sentences are simple and the illustrations are pretty.

The Busy Little Squirrel is one of our favorites. Two of the pages have repeated wording throughout the book, which is wonderful. It allows Elani to “read along” and say the words that she knows.

A Very Thankful Prayer has the best illustrations out of any of the books that we own. It is simply beautiful! For now, I only read the first sentence or two of each page because it definitely has a lot more words than the other two books that I have mentioned.

Halloween Themed Books

Most of these books are from last year, but I added a couple of new ones. Elani has been really enjoying lift-the-flap books. They are fun, but they also work those fine motor skills!

Mickey’s Halloween is lift-the-flap book that reviews numbers, colors, shapes, and other things. This was a nightly read for us for many weeks. Elani really enjoys this book and has yet to rip any of the flaps!

I purchased You’re My Little Pumpkin Pie because we already have You’re My Little Cuddle Bunny and Elani loves that one. This is another cute book from the collection. I plan to purchase the other two books as well (You’re My Little Cuddle Bug and You’re My Little Christmas Wish). They just recently added You’re My Little Snuggle Bear this fall so I will have to get that one as well!

Trick or Treat is another lift-the-flap book. I think that it has more words than necessary, but I just don’t read all of the sentences as we go through this book. This is another book with flaps that have stood the test of time (and a toddler’s fingers). Elani really enjoys books with flaps, but I generally purchase the ones that are sturdier. This has not disappointed though!

My First Halloween is a book from last year that Elani rediscovered this year. It is definitely meant for a younger child (about two words per page), but she enjoys that it has touch-and-feel pages. At her age, I ask her questions about what she sees on the pages, as well as how the different pages feel. She also can “read” the book on her own since their are so few words.

I purchased The Itsy Bitsy Pumpkin because Elani loves singing The Itsy Bitsy Spider. There are a lot of motion words in the book so it is great for movement or just hand gestures.

Boo! was a favorite last year and still is this year. Again, the repetition allows this book to be a great way for your toddler to interact with the reading. This book has finger holes, but Elani prefers to look through them, which is just as fun!

Thanksgiving Themed Books

These are all books from last year that Elani enjoyed. I do plan to get one or two more for this year. Though I categorized A Very Thankful Prayer as a fall book, it is definitely a Thanksgiving book as well.

Biscuit is Thankful is a book that I purchased last year and so are the rest of the Thanksgiving books within this list. I will probably add two more Thanksgiving books to our collection. Elani loves dogs, but we do not have many dog books. This is a nice addition and she enjoys the sound words.

Five Silly Turkeys is another fun book for movement and hand gestures. Elani does not care about the shiny tabs like she did last year, but she enjoys the actual words and motions that can go with them

Mickey’s Thanksgiving is another touch-and-feel book, but it has a lot more words than the Halloween book that I previously mentioned. Elani’s favorite page is the one with the pitcher of lemonade because it’s sticky. I like the different textures in this book.

I plan to only grow our collection as the years go by. As Elani outgrows some of these books, I look forward to reliving them with our next little girl. I still stick to board books almost exclusively because I want them to last. Feel free to share your fall favorites in the comments!
